Case Study 1:

Mac G5 – Student Missing Documents

Issue

A student had been using a Mac G5 system for 3 years without any problems. The student needed documents from year one for his finals. He had a folder in documents called year one and all his 1st year uni work was in that folder. When he opened the folder it was blank. He then clicked onto the folder and that was also blank. His final year folder (year 3) is okay and contained all his data but the student needed the data back from 1st two years to complete his degree. The student scanned the hard drive with recovery software but did not work for him.

Our Solution

We received in the hard drive and diagnosed that the hard drive had millions of bad sectors. We put hard drive on a sector imaging machine and copied all the sectors from the hard drive. We imaged all sectors and processed the data from the Mac G5 hard drive. All missing data was recovered.

Case Study 2:

Buffalo Linkstation – One Failed Disk in Raid Array

Issue

Client reported that the Buffalo Linkstation had fallen off their network. The business was a local vet in Milton Keynes and they used the Buffalo NAS for all business related data including their booking in system, invoices and xrays. The client used windows explorer to try and locate the Buffalo Linkstation, he also used Buffalo Navigator software to try and locate the NAS system but again no joy. Client also tried connecting to the Buffalo Linkstation through its IP address using internet explorer but again no joy. Client tried replacing usb and power cables but again no joy.

Our Solution

We received in the 4 disk raid 5 Buffalo Linkstation from client and diagnosed that the 1st disk in the raid 5 Buffalo Linkstation array had failed. Normally it should report this and offer a rebuild option but the Buffalo Linkstation did not offer this option to our client. We imaged the 3 good disks in the Buffalo Linkstation and then processed the raid 5 data using the raid parity on those disks. Data was extracted and sent back to client within 2 days.

Case Study 3:

Failed IBM Server Rebuild

Issue

Client had a problem with a raid 5 server and had to replace one of the drives in the raid array. The client removed the failed hard drive on the advice of IBM Technical Support Department and installed a new hard drive. Client successfully replaced hard drive and waited for the system to rebuild but the rebuild process did not kick in. Instead the server does not recognise the array or the new hard drive that was a replacement disk for the failed hard drive. Client contacted IBM’s tech support and they got the server to recognise the array but they think from diagnosing the system that there is one disk still missing even though replacement disk is connected to system so won’t go onto the rebuild program. IBM cannot resolve the issue.

Our Solution

This is a common fault with IBM servers, a replacement disk stalls the server and it does not go into rebuild mode. We imaged all disks including the original failed disk and processed 100% of the data from the raid array. Data contained accounts data for Vat & Excise and Income tax data for the whole company.
